How it works
The EPA's WaterSense program points out that household leaks can waste a large amount of water over a year, and encourages checking for them.
A national estimate is not a finding about your home. Your own water use is a better starting point.
Signs worth a closer look
- A water bill that rises without a reason.
- Rust-colored water or rumbling from the water heater.
- Damp spots under sinks, around the water heater or in ceilings.
Your decision
Compare water use over similar periods before replacing fixtures at random. Know where your main shutoff is. For leaks, gas water heaters and gas lines, call a licensed plumber.
